Ombudsman marks International Day of Support for Victims of Torture
Every year on June 26th, the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture is celebrated. Today is an opportunity to pay tribute to those who strive daily to combat all forms of torture and ill-treatment. The Ombudsman, as a National Prevention Mechanism, reaffirms his solidarity with the victims and his commitment to fight for the eradication of a practice that clashes with fundamental notions of human rights.
In troubled times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this is also a time to remember that under no circumstances are there exceptions allowing the use of torture. The dramatic witness of victims of such practices demonstrates the need for us all to join forces to prevent their future repetition, respecting human dignity and the physical and mental integrity of all people, at all times.
