Accreditation as NHRI

The Global Alliance of National Human Rights Institutions (GANHRI), through the Sub-Committee on Accreditation (SCA), analyses and certifies the degree of compliance of national human rights institutions with the Paris Principles through an accreditation process. This is a rigorous peer review procedure carried out by representatives of other NHRIs and repeated periodically, every five years.

Accreditation by GANHRI gives national human rights institutions special rights to participate in international and regional organisations, and is usually encouraged by the UN General Assembly for national institutions.

The Ombudsman was first recognised with the highest ‘A’ status in 1999, and has maintained this accreditation in subsequent evaluation processes, the last of which took place in 2024. To find out more, click here.
