The Portuguese Ombudsperson at the General Assembly and Congress of the Ibero-American Ombudsperson Federation (FIO)
The Ombudsperson, Maria Lúcia Amaral, and the Deputy Ombudsman, Estrela Chaby, are participating in the XXVIII Ordinary General Assembly and the XXVII Congress of the Ibero-American Ombudsperson Federation (FIO), taking place between 3 and 5 October in Barranquilla, Colombia.
The agenda includes meetings of FIO’s Thematic Networks and Working Groups, the annual Congress on the theme “Independence and Autonomy in the Moral Magistracy: Essential Foundations of Democracy” and the meeting of FIO’s Ordinary General Assembly.
The FIO is an international association created in 1995 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, whose primary objectives are co-operation, the exchange of experiences and the promotion, dissemination and strengthening of the institution of the Ombudsman in the Ibero-American geographical area, expanding and strengthening the culture of human rights in the countries whose Ombudspersons are part of the FIO.
The Portuguese Ombudsman is a founding member. More than one hundred public defenders, prosecutors, ombudspersons and presidents of public human rights commissions from twenty-two Ibero-American countries, at national, state, regional-autonomous, provincial and municipal levels, are currently members of the FIO.
