Coordinator of the NPM at the opening session of the IOM Workshop on “Alternatives to Administrative Detention”

The Ombudsman was represented by the Coordinator of the National Preventive Mechanism of the Ombudsman Office, Miguel Feldmann, at the Workshop on “Alternatives to Administrative Detention”, an initiative of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the United Nations Migration Agency.

The meeting, which took place in Lisbon on 29 September, aimed to analyse, from a legal and practical point of view, administrative detention/placement in temporary settlement centres and non-custodial alternatives for migrants and refugees.

Good practices existing in other countries were also demonstrated and guidelines for their implementation in the national context were discussed.

The Workshop was attended by the Director General of Justice Policy of the Ministry of Justice, representing the Deputy Secretary of State and Justice, with the IOM Chief of Mission in Portugal and several international experts in the area of migration.
