International Day of People with Disabilities
On December 3rd it is celebrated the International Day of People with Disabilities, established by the United Nations General Assembly (Resolution 47/3).
On this day, the Ombudsman of Portugal underlines the continuous need to promote people with disabilities’ rights, to work for their well-being and to take action for their inclusion in all aspects of life, whether is in politics, society, economy or culture.
It should also be underlined that the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities states as fundamental principles the dignity, autonomy and freedom of choice of persons with disabilities, non-discrimination, participation, respect for the difference, equality, the accessibility and ability of children with disabilities to develop while preserving their identity.
The Ombudsman of Portugal has the People with Disabilities ‘Line available to the citizens. This is a free service and is aimed to answer people with disabilities’ issues. Through the number 800 20 84 62 information is provided concerning the rights and supports addressed to these citizens in areas such as health, social security, housing, social facilities and services.
