Iberoamerican Ombudsperson Federation (FIO)
The Portuguese Ombudsman is a founding member of the Ibero-American Federation of Ombudsperson (FIO), an international association established in 1995 in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. The primary goals of this Federation are the cooperation, exchange of experiences and the promotion, dissemination and strengthening of the Ombudsman institution in that geographical area.
In FIO’s activity, in addition to work specifically developed for the promotion and defense of human rights – including the activities developed by the thematic networks created within this institution – there are also projects established in the areas of education and training.
The Portuguese Ombudsman participates in the meetings of the governing bodies of this organization and presents contributions towards the detailed studies carried out on different human rights issues, as well as for the preparation of FIO’s annual reports. Currently, the members of FIO are from the following countries: Andorra, Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Chile, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Spain, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela.
