Ombudsman’s Office at the launch of the IOM project on strengthening human rights in detention centres for migration purposes in Portugal
The Ombudsman’s Office joined the launch of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) project ‘Rights without Borders: Cooperation to Strengthen Human Rights in Detention Centres for Migration Purposes in Portugal’. The initiative, which took place in Lisbon on 25 September 2024, is part of the mission to contribute to the promotion and defence of the human rights of foreign people detained due to their migratory situation and to promote alternatives to deprivation of liberty, in line with international and regional human rights standards. The Ombudsman’s Office was represented by the coordinator of the National Prevention Mechanism, Miguel Feldmann, who closed the event. The IOM is part of the United Nations International Human Rights System and its mission is to promote humane and orderly migration.
